High School Drama Students Win Awards at State Thespian Festival

Students from Francis Scott Key, Liberty, Manchester Valley, and South Carroll, High Schools recently participated in the Maryland State Thespian Festival. All four schools entered a One-Act into the statewide competition, and many students competed in individual event and for scholarships.


Francis Scott Key High School was awarded Outstanding Ensemble in Studio Theatre for their performance of the One Act, “The Bald Soprano.” Zach Brown and Justin Patterson were chosen as Best Actors for their performances. Cailah Moss received two superior ratings and qualified for the National Festival in Musical Theatre.


Liberty High School was awarded Outstanding Sound and Outstanding Props for their performance of “The Lottery” in the Ruth Marder Theatre. Cam Luther and Rachel Jancarek were awarded Best Actors for their performance.


For Manchester Valley, the cast and crew of “The Insanity of Mary Girard” took home awards for Outstanding Vocal Work, Outstanding Physical Work, Outstanding Costumes, and Outstanding Hair and Makeup in the Ruth Marder Theatre. Additionally, the show placed 2nd in the state, which qualified Manchester Valley as Maryland State alternates to National Festival. Jacob Schoenberger and Elizabeth Vinson took home Best Actor Awards. Alexandra Overby and Jake Schoenberger both qualified for National competition in Solo Musical Theater. The group also took 2nd Place in Quiz Bowl and 3rd Place in Tech Olympics.


South Carroll High School received the award for Outstanding Technical Crew in the Ruth Marder Theatre for their world premiere performance of “Negative Space.” Senior Playwright Ashley Ingle was invited to submit the One Act for the chance to make it a workshop during the National Festival. Seniors Emma Hughes and Rachel Palmer took home Best Actor Awards for their performances. Junior Sarah Taylor was awarded two Superior ratings for Stage Management, qualifying her for National Competition this summer. 

Overall, Carroll County High School Thespian Troupes received many awards and recognitions during the 2019 Maryland State Thespian Festival.
