The Community Media Center (CMC) is collecting interviews with local Vietnam Veterans as part of the Carroll County History Project. A special Veterans Oral History Collection Day will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Community Media Center, located at 1301 Washington Road, Westminster, MD.

Local veterans are encouraged to visit the CMC website at www.carrollmediacenter.org to schedule their interview appointment online. Interviews will be conducted every ½ hour from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. by appointment only.   Interested veterans should schedule their appointment no later than October 14, 2017.  Interviews will be recorded on video and broadcast on cable Channel 19, premiering on November 11, 2017, in observance of Veterans Day.

The purpose of this project is to recognize the service of our veterans who were denied a proper welcome upon returning home more than 40 years ago, and to preserve the memories and insights of those who served during the Vietnam War era. This is an opportunity for local veterans to talk about their experiences and perhaps share the stories they may have never before told. Through the important, personal accounts of those who served during wartime, we can begin to see how military experiences during time of conflict, affect every aspect of life, regardless of whether a person served overseas or stateside.

The videos will become a part of the Carroll County History Project’s permanent, online oral history archive. The History Project’s Carroll County Veterans collection, makes these personal accounts of local service men and women accessible online at www.carrollhistory.org, so that future generations may hear directly from veterans to better understand the realities of service and of war. All local veterans are welcome to schedule an interview, regardless of their date of service, however veterans of the Vietnam War era are of particular interest for this collection day.

Opportunities are also available for individuals who are interested in conducting interviews with our local veterans. Basic interview questions will be provided and fellow veterans and students are encouraged to participate. This is an excellent opportunity for student service learning hours. For more information about the project or volunteering to conduct an interview, please contact Sherry Taylor, Marketing Director at the Community Media Center by calling 410-386-4415.
