Nearly 80 elementary, middle, and high school students with special needs will participate in the 28th annual Tournament of Champions on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McDaniel College. The event is open to students with orthopedic, visual, and behavioral needs who attend public, private, or home schools.

The day will begin with an Opening Ceremony, including a parade of the student athletes, at 10 a.m. Athletic events will take place from 10:15 a.m. to noon. At 1 p.m., all of the students will participate in a relay race. An Awards Ceremony will be held at 1:15 p.m. with representatives from the Maryland State Police and Westminster Police Department. Each participant will receive a medal and certificate. The Closing Ceremony will be held at 2 p.m.

The Tournament of Champions allows students to participate along with McDaniel buddies who are primarily student-athletes at McDaniel. The students challenge themselves individually and achieve their best scores in various athletic events such as parachute play, scooter races, floor hockey, bocce ball, and corn hole, among others. All events are modified to meet the individual needs of the participants. Students do not compete against each other and can go back to any of the 16 events to better their own scores.
