Charles Evans, a technology education teacher at East Middle School, has been selected to receive the Technology and Engineering Association of Maryland’s 2017 Middle School Program Excellence Award.

Evans demonstrates outstanding qualities in the technology education program at East Middle School and nationally in technology and engineering education.  He has continued to grow and develop his program to include trans-disciplinary content.  Evans has worked diligently to build teacher capacity both at East Middle and in the state, and focuses on creating a positive, collaborative culture where the students belong to a community beyond the classroom.  His dedication to success contributes to the great start in engineering design these middle school students have experienced.

Evans also has taken a leading role in writing, piloting, and implementing hands-on, authentic, standards-based lessons for the Maryland State Department of Education, Engineering by Design, and Engineering for All.  He is one of three Engineering by Design middle school curriculum trainers in the state.  He is willing to take on the challenge to improve instruction and student learning at the school, county, state and national levels.  He has participated in the STEM Professional Learning Communities, cross curricular integration, and curriculum development.

As the Maryland middle school program award winner, Evans will be recognized with the Program Excellence Award at the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association’s Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas.
