WHY MARYLAND ENERGY CUSTOMERS WILL SEE PRICE INCREASES

On April 8, 2019, the Maryland General Assembly passed the Clean Energy Jobs Act, which will help create solar, wind and renewable energy jobs in Maryland: foster the development of off-shore wind projects in Maryland: and increase the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) from 20.7% to 50% by 2030.

Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) is an industry term that requires suppliers to provide a portion of the electricity to their customers from qualified renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind.

Legislation passed in the District of Columbia has resulted in immediate price increases of 14% to 18%, and based on recent competitive bids, CQI estimates the increase in Maryland to be similar.
The legislation does provide a grace period or “Grandfather Clause”, which allows contracts signed prior to October 2019, to be exempt from any rate increase, until the end date of said contract.
