McDaniel hosts 150th Birthday Party in addition to festivities during McDaniel’s Green Terror Homecoming football game


McDaniel College’s 150th Birthday Party is Saturday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

Celebration continues at 2 p.m. at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium as McDaniel’s Green Terror football team takes on the Mules of Muhlenberg College

Both the Birthday Party and Football Game are Free and Open to the Public



McDaniel College celebrates its 150th anniversary with a milestone event in conjunction with Homecoming and Family Weekend that is free and open to the public.

McDaniel College’s 150th Birthday Party includes:

=         Live music featuring Western Maryland College/McDaniel College alumni

=         Children’s historical games from 1867, such as Ring the Hob, Hornbrook and Hoop and Roll, as well as a balloon artist, face painting and arts and crafts

=         Beer and wine garden featuring food and drinks available for purchase from Johansson’s Dining House, Serpent Ridge Vineyard, Furnace Hills Coffee and Shepherd’s Manor Creamery

=         Opening reception for the “150 Years on the Hill” art exhibition, which highlights each decade of the college’s history, with remarks by college historian James E. Lightner

=         Viewings of “Fearless and Bold: LIVE,” a 90-minute multimedia presentation on the college’s history adapted from the book, “Fearless and Bold”

=         McDaniel College archivist Andrea Briggs leads a pre-event historical walking tour of McDaniel’s campus

The celebration continues as McDaniel’s Green Terror football team takes on the Mules of Muhlenberg College at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.This Centennial Conference game marks the 48th meeting between McDaniel and Muhlenberg in a series that dates back to 1927. The Green Terror is 55-27-1 on Homecoming, including winning 14 of the last 24. McDaniel is nationally recognized for its unique drive-in tailgating tradition and approximately 2,500 fans annually attend the Homecoming football game. Admission to the game is free; parking on the field is $10 per vehicle (cash only, payable at the gate). Gates for admittance to Kenneth R. Gill Stadium open at 10 a.m.

Football Game Highlights include:

=         Annual presentation of the Homecoming court, awarding of the James Brant Memorial Cup and recognition of the Alumni and Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame award recipients during a pre-game ceremony

=         New Green Terror mascot to be unveiled as the Green Terror football team takes the field. The Green Terror first appeared in the Oct. 15, 1923, edition of the “Western Maryland” monthly and recounts the Western Maryland College (WMC) football game with Washington and Lee in Lexington, Va., in which the WMC players were referred to as “green terrors.” The Green Terror mascot has seen several incarnations, including as a wolf-like critter, a bobcat and a leopard.

=         Halftime Anniversary Celebration, led by McDaniel College President Roger N. Casey, with performances by McDaniel’s cheerleading squad and pep band, plus the reveal of a giant cake created by students from the Carroll County Career and Technology Center in honor of McDaniel’s 150th anniversary, as well as 2,000 cupcakes to be served to game attendees.


Additional athletic events take place throughout the day, including a volleyball tri-match with the Green Terror volleyball team competing against Muhlenberg and Lancaster Bible, Green Terror women’s soccer against Muhlenberg and Green Terror men’s soccer against Muhlenberg.

  • McDaniel College’s 150th Birthday Party is 10 a.m.–2 p.m., with most events taking place in Memorial Plaza
    • “150 Years on the Hill” exhibition reception takes place at 10 a.m. in Rice Gallery, Peterson Hall
    • Viewings of “Fearless and Bold: LIVE” throughout the day in Decker Auditorium, Lewis Hall of Science
    • Remarks by McDaniel President Roger N. Casey and Westminster Mayor Joe Dominick at noon on the music stage near Baker Memorial Chapel
  • Kickoff of the Homecoming football game at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium at 2 p.m.
    • New Green Terror mascot unveiled prior to the game at approximately 1:45 p.m.
    • Halftime Anniversary Celebration is slated for halftime at approximately 3:15 p.m.
  • Other athletic events include a volleyball tri-match at noon2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Gill Center, women’s soccer at 1 p.m. on the soccer field and men’s soccer at 4 p.m. on the soccer field


McDaniel College marks its 150th anniversary during the 2017–2018 academic year with special celebrations that honor the college’s past, present and future.

Founded in 1867 as the first coeducational college south of the Mason-Dixon Line, McDaniel was formerly known as Western Maryland College, named for the Western Maryland railroad. In 2002, the college was renamed for William Roberts McDaniel in honor of his 65-year association with the college as a student, professor, administrator and trustee.
