The Community Media Center (CMC), a nonprofit Public, Education and Government (PEG) media facility serving Carroll County, MD announced today that the Board of Directors has elected Richard Turner as Executive Director effective December 1, 2016. Turner succeeds the Media Centers previous Director, Marion Ware, who announced her desire to step down earlier this year, after almost 18 years of service.

“After a thorough and deliberate selection process, the Board of Directors is delighted that Richard will lead CMC as we begin the process of developing a strategic plan, and identifying new ways to use technology to fulfill our mission,” said Steve Kerby, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “Richard’s background in public access, business development, information technology and community engagement will provide us with a solid foundation to grow the organization and develop innovative and essential programs that serve our community.”

Turner brings with him more than thirty years of experience in community media. He served in a Chief Executive capacity at Montgomery Community Television, (MCT) a public access facility in Rockville, Maryland and at ‘Olelo: The Corporation for Community Television in Honolulu, Hawaii. While at ‘Olelo, he grew the station into an integrated PEG Access organization with five channels including continuous coverage of the Hawaii State Legislature’s proceedings.

Most recently, Turner was the Regional Sales Director for Tightrope Media Systems, an industry leader in video servers, automation and digital signage solutions. He also provided consulting services through his own business focusing on marketing, communications and information technologies.

When asked about his ideas for public access in Carroll County, Turner said, “Community media is increasingly important as we look to new ways in which we can learn about our neighbors, have an outlet for your voices and celebrate our great community. I look forward to learning more about how CMC can be your local source for news, information and inspiration.”

Previously Turner served as the Cable and Broadband Video Engineer and IT specialist for Montgomery County, MD. During that time he was responsible for providing broadcast and IP engineering services to the operation and maintenance of cable television digital HD production, post-production and playback facilities for Montgomery County Government.

Turner has also worked in various capacities in television production and station operations including KTVU-TV Channel 2 and KRON-TV Channel 4 in San Francisco. He continues to produce, direct and edit various projects including documentaries, music videos and live event coverage.

He holds a degree in Communications from Laney College in Oakland California and was a Social Welfare Major at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Turner has been recognized for his leadership locally and nationally including the Jewell Ryan White Award and Distinguished Community Leader Award and has served on a number of national, regional and local nonprofit boards. Turner is married with three children and currently lives in Rockville, MD.
