On Saturday, April 11, 2015, men strode down Main Street sidewalks wearing women’s shoes to demonstrate that men are willing and able to be courageous partners with women in making our community a safer place.

Close to 150 walkers participated in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®, which netted over $21,000, to benefit Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County (RCIS), who hosted the event.

The 2015 Highest Fundraising Team was the Gerstell Academy.  The 19 walkers on the team raised a whopping $2,851.

For the third year in a row, Stephen Hirsch was the Highest Fundraising Individual.  Mr. Hirsch raised a total of $1,645 for RCIS.  Along with his trophy, Stephen also won a small charcoal grill, filled with grilling accessories and over $100 in gift cards to local restaurants. Both winners will have their names printed on the back of next year’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® t-shirts, along with sponsors of the event.

Janice A. Kispert, CEO of RCIS, stated “We are honored and humbled by the outpouring of sincere enthusiasm from the men in our community.  After our seventh year hosting this annual walk in Carroll County, it is encouraging to see our community continue to be so responsive to call attention to the silent epidemic of rape and sexual offenses against women in society.”

Each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women and their families join “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence.” Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is a fun opportunity for men to educate the community about a very serious subject and to rally the community to take action to prevent sexual violence.  For more information about Carroll County’s event, please visit www.walkamilecc.org .  Mark the date for next year’s walk on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

RCIS is a private, non-profit agency serving Carroll County, Maryland, since 1978. RCIS provides free counseling and support services to victims of sexual violence and their families. We also offer prevention education programs and professional training in order to eliminate sexual violence through education and advocacy.
