McDaniel College President Roger N. Casey has been appointed to serve on two national boards for higher education. He has been elected as both vice chair of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) and to the Board of Directors for the American Council on Education (ACE).

President Casey was unanimously nominated by the executive committee of NAICU, independent higher education’s largest policy and advocacy group, to serve as vice chair of the organization’s board of directors. The election took place at the NAICU 2019 Annual Meeting, Feb. 3–6, in Washington, D.C. He will serve as vice chair for a one-year term ending in February 2020 before assuming the position of board chair through 2021.

In his role with NAICU, he helps to set the association’s agenda on federal higher education policy, actively encourages support of association priorities and initiatives and oversee the organization’s financial administration. He previously served a three-year term on the NAICU Board of Directors representing the association’s Region II, which includes colleges and universities in Maryland, as well as Delaware, District of Columbia, New Jersey and New York.

In addition, President Casey has been selected to the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education (ACE), the major coordinating body for the nation’s colleges and universities. As the NAICU representative on the board, his three-year term begins March 2019, following ACE’s 101st Annual Meeting, March 9–12, in Philadelphia.

According to ACE President Ted Mitchell, “ACE’s mission is to mobilize the higher education community to shape effective public policy and foster innovative, high-quality practice, and we are fortunate to have leaders from across the diverse landscape of American colleges and universities who are dedicated to helping us achieve these goals.”

The ninth president of McDaniel College and one of the longest-serving independent college presidents in the State of Maryland, he has also been named a 2019 Influential Marylander by The Daily Record. Honorees for the award were selected by the editors of The Daily Record for their contributions in their respective fields and their leadership in Maryland.

An active higher education leader on both the national and state levels, President Casey currently chairs the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA), the voice of independent higher education in Maryland, and vice-chairs the Centennial Athletic Conference. He also served on the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) steering committee to assess the future of independent colleges.

A Phi Beta Kappan and first-generation college graduate, he holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English from Florida State University and a bachelor’s degree from Furman University.
